Five Star Land & Cattle is a picturesque place where Angus cattle graze upon golden pastures that meet rolling vineyards of zinfandel and petite sirah. The San Francisco coastline is a mere 100 miles in the distance. Abbie Nelson is a fourth-generation Angus breeder. Her great-grandfather was an Iowa homesteader, and one of the first to import Angus cattle from Scotland in the 1800s. Today, Abbie and husband, Mark, grow high-quality beef on the family’s central California ranch.
“Our family’s story and the Angus industry’s story are worth sharing,” Abbie says. “Once we get them here their comments become ‘I didn’t understand this, I didn’t know that!’ They can do a complete 180 in an afternoon.”
“I’ve always been an avid supporter of the Certified Angus Beef ® brand. We know how much it helps our business and improves the value of the cattle,” Abbie says.
“I can’t imagine raising my family away from our cattle," Abbie says. "Having the opportunity to be responsible for the care, the chores, the marketing — it teaches kids everything they need to know.”
Education is part of the job – including teaching the public about the safety of her end product. The ranch has an open-gate policy – rather gates were never built – and the result is an ever-increasing number of guests who visit, ask questions and leave with an understanding of the beef industry and a family tied to it.
