Contemporary myth attributes invention of the sandwich to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, in 1762. Rumor has it Lord Sandwich consumed meat between slices of bread at the gambling table, which allowed him a free hand to hold his cards. Historians say it’s more likely the Earl ate sandwiches at his desk while working for the Navy.
Necessity is the mother of invention. Whether the Earl’s sandwich came from necessity at work or play, he contributed to modern culture.
