In 1978, Ella Whitt purchased the first pound of Certified Angus Beef ® brand product at Renzetti’s IGA in Columbus, Ohio. Whitt couldn’t know her simple purchase would launch a new frontier for the beef industry – the world’s first brand of fresh beef.
Dedication to great flavor
The landmark sale and the steady success of the Certified Angus Beef ® brand is attributed to a handful of Ohio cattlemen and Angus supporters who envisioned consistently flavorful, tender and juicy beef that would exceed consumer demands for quality.
The Certified Angus Beef Program was formed in 1978 to provide assurances of beef flavor and tenderness to consumers, who during the 1970s were largely dissatisfied with beef. The program would support the American Angus Association ® by providing consumers mouthwatering beef, ultimately creating demand for high-quality Angus cattle.
Today, the brand sells over 60 million pounds of product per month through foodservice and grocery stores worldwide. It is the largest, most successful brand of beef and a symbol of excellence to consumers at nearly 16,000 restaurants and grocery stores in the United States and throughout the world.
